Use
Prednisone is a potent immunosuppressive agent. It can thus be used in all diseases where the immune system is causally involved (autoimmune diseases), an inflammatory reaction of the body is not desirable (such as asthma or allergy) or as to prevent rejection after organ transplantation.
Dependence
When prednisone is taken for longer than seven days, it comes to limiting the body's production of glucocorticoids in the adrenals and dependence of the artificial Prednisonzufuhr. For this reason, prednisone should not be discontinued abruptly if the treatment lasts longer than seven days, but the dose must be reduced slowly. This takes a few days after cessation of short-term prednisone intake, but that may take weeks or even months after long-term treatment.
Abrupt withdrawal of prednisone can cause life-threatening conditions that are related to the Addison's disease (Addison's crisis).
