Tamoxifen reduced the recurrence of breast cancer long after women have stopped taking the drug. Tamoxifen blocks the hormone estrogen and is used to treat breast cancer and for prevention in women at high risk of disease. The International Breast Cancer Intervention Study (IBIS-II) has now shown that the effect of the drug over the five years beyond term treatment. Women taking the drug, possessed a 34 percent reduced risk of hormone-sensitive form of the disease to suffer. At the study included 7145 women. Details of the international study were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
