In an attempt to defeat the enemy supposed to be producing large amounts of inflammatory mediators - including the tissue hormone histamine and signaling molecules from the group of leukotrienes and cytokines. These mediators trigger inflammation and are ultimately responsible for the symptoms.
Histamine plays a key role: it is coupled to specific binding sites on the cells and triggers different reactions: the fine blood vessels to widen, there will be redness and swelling - caused itching, pain and inflammation.
Fexofenadine is an H1 antihistamine: It blocks the tissue specific binding sites for histamine, the histamine H1-receptors. Histamine is still released, but it is not enough free binding sites to exert its effect. Fexofenadine reduced but also the release of histamine and leukotrienes, and thus has additional anti-inflammatory properties.
